How to Use CBD Crude Oil
There are many ways you can use CBD Crude Oil. Tinctures, capsules, topical salves, lotions, edibles and dietary supplements to name a few. You can add the oil to food or beverages and consume orally, you can administer it sublingually under the tongue, or you can infuse topical lotions or salves to be applied directly to the skin.
Not all CBD Crude Oil is the Same
In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention found that as many as 52 people were sickened by fake CBD Oil in Utah. The head of major crimes in the State Bureau of Investigation was tasked with tracking down everyone involved in the manufacture and sale of these products. Don’t risk health and reputation by chasing the cheapest price. Doing business with brokers who are inherently interested in sourcing the cheapest product and marking it up is a risky proposition. Go straight to the source and know where your CBD is coming from.
What is Decarboxylation & How Does it Work?
Decarboxylation is simply applying heat to the plant material over time to create a reaction. The raw cannabinoids have a carboxyl ring or group (COOH) present in their molecular structure comprised of a carbon atom bonded to an oxygen atom (CO) and a hydroxyl group (OH). Heating removes the carbon atom from the chain and as a result carbon dioxide (CO2) is released.
The result of this process is that the raw acid cannabinoids found in the plant material are converted into the sought after activated, decarbed cannabinoids. This concept applies universally to all types of cannabis including marijuana and hemp. We will use both in the examples below, though we primarily focus on the hemp CBD side of things.
Do CBD Products Need to Be Decarboxylated?
Decarboxylation is a concept popularly discussed in marijuana circles because it is often sold as raw flower and must be activated before use. While smoked hemp flower is growing in popularity, the concept is not well known in CBD circles.
The majority of CBD products are sold as final, activated products like tinctures, capsules, or body care products. This means that the end-user does not need to worry about decarboxylation. Despite the lack of required consumer awareness, all hemp grown for extraction into CBD-rich products does need to be decarboxylated somewhere between harvest and sale as a final product.
